  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from asnowmomma -- Never heard of this book before but LOVED IT. : I really enjoyed this novel. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys Austen, Gaskell, or any other female authors of the same caliber. The first part of the book sets the stage for the curates and the town as a whole. (This part I would actually recommend reading quickly as I felt it had nothing to do with the story of “Shirley”. The latter half is a great story with some interesting plot twists between relationships. The writing and diction were impeccable. Just so varied and unique. I wish I had wrote down all the archaic words we no longer use but that are so on pointe for the sentiment of the moment. This book is underrated and a surprising enjoyment. I now wish they would make this into a movie. It would make a great screen play. The banter between characters and also the strong character of Shirley as a woman during her epoch. Highly recommend! • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- History and Romance : This novel is set in England during the time when machines were beginning to do work once done by men. There were poverty and discontent. War was complicating the situation. Warehouses were filled with goods that could not be sold, leading to more unemployment. Bitterness grew among men no longer able to provide for their families. Their anger targeted the mill owners. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2019 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from JaneApp -- A glorious mess : While this novel was Charlotte Brönte's favourite among her own works, it needed a good editor. It's an entertaining read, but if you want a more polished look at similar themes and haven't yet read "North and South" (by Elizabeth Gaskell), I recommend starting with that one. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- An Ever-current Drama : Although this book did not receive the same the same acclaim as did Charlotte Bronte's masterpiece Jane Eyre, I thought it to be a very compelling novel. It is written around the theme of the modernization of the textile mills in Yorkshire at mid 19th century. It deals with the gulf between "haves" and "have-nots" and the single minded materialism of most of the mill owners and managers. Woven into this, and probably the main message of the book, is the plight of the women of the day, especially the "old maids" and those who entered into loveless marriages in order to escape the "old maid" role or because their social class and/or wealth or lack of it demanded marriage with a man of equal or superior status. Miss Bronte, as in Jane Eyre, does an excellent job of character development. Perhaps the reason that her readers and critics did not rate this novel as high as her other one is that it contains long soliloquies or journal entries by some of the characters where their intimate thoughts are revealed in a somewhat poetic manner that can become rather boring. However, this makes up a minor part of the book. I found myself skimming these sections. Miss Bronte starts this book by a first chapter in which she paints a graphic and unfavorable picture of three curates. These curates are minor characters in the book, but they come into play quite a few times in the story. Miss Bronte draws her information from her life experience as a clergyman's daughter, and I am led to believe that it is this unpopular picture of the curates that gave her novel Shirley a less popular rating in its day. Some of these curates are judged to have been modeled on real-life curates who served her father from time to time. This chapter was objected to by the publisher's reader who had had the discernment to see the value of Jane Eyer. By the time Shirley was submitted, Miss Bronte's fame as a novelist had been established, and so Shirley was accepted for publication in spite of its detractions. It is interesting to note that in that day, the name, Shirley, was considered to be a masculine name. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2014 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Elizabeth -- If you are expecting passion and stimulus and melodrama - forget it! : Bronte's Shirley was written two years after Jane Eyre took Victorian England by storm. Some reviews were harsh and those who cared for the beloved author took care to hide reviews which might bring tears to her eyes. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2010 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Shirley - a good Romantic story set against the background of Napoleonic War's economic and human consequences : I bought this edition because it has an excellent introductory essay by Andrew Hook, free of the irrelevant overlay of present day political views so often found in more recently published editions. "Shirley" is another fascinating work in Charlotte Bronte's oeuvre. It is a historical novel set in Yorkshire in Napoleonic times. As with other fictional accounts from all periods - when they are well done - "Shirley" provides a real sense of the times. Here, it is the combined effects of the Napoleonic wars and the industrial revolution on individuals and small communities and the actions they took to defend their positions. Charlotte Bronte is at pains through her characterisation to be evenhanded and to show each group's point of view, whether it is the workers whose livelihoods were being destroyed by new machinery, or the mill owners with stock piling up that they could not move because the war's effect on trade etc etc. Against this historical background CB weaves a love story where, in keeping with her other novels, "Jane Eyre" & "Villette", the path of love does not run smooth. As a writer she manages well the technical problem identified by Flaubert when he was writing "Education Sentimentale", namely that his background (the 1848 revolutions) would swallow up his foreground since real life heros were usually more interesting than fictional characters. Recommend "Shirley" for anyone interested in history and / or the remarkable Brontes. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 30, 2016 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from John M Bostock -- My wife loved it : A challenging read of the book that Bronte described as :"as dull as a Monday morning" in response to critics of "Jane Eyre". Limited plot but highly satisfying. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 24, 2020 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Sandy Kay -- Not a patch on other Bronte books : Interesting to read a different Bronte style - but tediously long and rather hard-going. The storyline is good politically but so wordy that it's easy to lose track. The actual "story" about the two women is quite boring, somewhat predictable, and the ending is too abrupt - almost as though Charlotte Bronte got tired of it herself! ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 7, 2016 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Fishpix2010 -- Very much a Victorian romance, but well-written and with some interesting social and political comentary : Charlotte Bronte mixes a rather traditional romance, with classic ups and downs before the various lovers are united, with some serious and interesting commentary on the social and political changes in the Yorkshire mills at the beginning of the industrial revolution. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 26, 2014 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Mrs. K. Davies -- Loom-breakers, curate satire and love at last : The feminine indepedence of this novel is astonishing considering the date and the insights and ideas are very thought provoking. Bronte's characters are thoroughly realistic, as always and the plot pretty fantastical but nonetheless page-turning. I didn't really like the experimental writing in different genres but it wasn't a large part of the text. It's such a beautifully imagined / documented world and so well written that I was absorbed for days after finishing it. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 8, 2012 )
