Langner -- The most important historical figure in amateur radio that you've never heard of : This is the story of a man who was a legend in his own time to those who knew him and is perhaps the most important historical figure in amateur radio that you've never heard of. For all of us who lived through the times of of early single-sideband's arrival in amateur radio, here's one of its most important contributors. Wes Shum was Central Electronics, creator of the CE 10A, 20A & B, and the still much coveted today 100V. Those of us who only had AM rigs listened to the "monkey-chatter" of the SSB signals and soon realized that these SSB guys were talking farther with less power, hearing with greater clarity, and operating free from the piercing carrier heterodyne interference that plagued our congested phone (voice) ham radio bands. Today SSB is in universal use all around the world, and is the mainstay of amateur radio voice communications from every continent. We who have one clear conversation after another on our amateur radios owe a great debt of gratitude to Wes Shum, and will find the story of his career a fascinating read! • 5.0 out of 5 stars from George M -- A story that needed to be told! : After reading this book, you find yourself asking why it took so long to recognize Wes Schum as a pioneer in the field of radio communications, and also a man who devoted much of his career to helping the hearing impaired. Schum was a visionary that pushed hard on the proliferation of single sideband (SSB) transmission in the amateur radio world by introducing low cost but technologically advanced equipment. It could reach out farther than Amplitude Modulation (AM) with less power. His genius led to the amateur community to embracing SSB over time. This was not lost on the military, who eventually adopted SSB to improve global communications reliability. His company, Central Electronics, was a cornerstone of SSB equipment, but eventually became a victim of big parent company decisions and management changes. Disappointed but undaunted, he continued his work with the hearing impaired by developing electronic aids to help them, in many cases to hear for the first time. The story is well told by Nick Tusa, who deserves major kudos for putting in print so we can all appreciate Shum's contributions. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2021 )
• 5.0 out of 5 stars from kzinti -- Must Read for HAM "boatanchor" radio fans : Great info and an excellent source for any HAM Radio op who is "into" the older 1940's - 1970's tube type equipment. A very interesting read too. The boatanchor term refers to the relative value ( or lack) of a heavy old radio that is only good to throw overboard and use to tie up your rowboat. It expertly explains and educates on something that most take for granted, walking you through the eyes of one determined man's unwavering, challenge accepting and failure busting tribulations of how it got there. It's got levity, with class. It even has swimming pools with gals! WOWZERS! Who knew SSB history could be this exciting? I'm going to read it again! One such technique was Single Sideband, which allowed more effective communications than previous methodologies. Many engineers and companies were involved in bringing SSB mainstream. The FIRST SSB product for amateur radio was made available by the Central Electronics Company (CE). This book is about its founder, Wes Schum who, through force of will and intellect, developed and produced a revolutionary product.
